How it works

The referral process, step by step

From the moment you refer a debt to the moment your client is paid — here is exactly what happens.

The referral lifecycle

From referral to recovery

  1. 1

    You refer the debt

Complete the online referral form with the basic details — your name and contact, your client's business name, the debtor, and the approximate outstanding amount. It takes around two minutes.

Once submitted, you receive a secure portal link by email. Sign in to finalise the referral, track progress, and communicate with the Merion team directly.

  2. 2

    Merion assesses the account

A recovery specialist reviews the debt — the amount, age, debtor type, and supporting documentation. We will contact you promptly if we need further detail.

If the account is suitable for recovery, we proceed immediately. If it is not — for example, if the debt is statute-barred or the debtor is insolvent — we tell you honestly, and there is no charge.

  3. 3

    Recovery on commission-only

Merion contacts the debtor and pursues recovery through correspondence, negotiation, and — where required — escalation to pre-legal action. All contact is conducted in full compliance with the ACCC/ASIC Debt Collection Guideline and applicable state regulations.

There is no fee at this stage. Commission applies only if funds are recovered.

  4. 4

    Your client stays informed

Throughout recovery, your client receives regular updates from their named Merion contact. Every action, response, and milestone is documented in the client portal.

You, as the referring partner, can also track the referral's status in the portal at any time.

  5. 5

    Funds recovered, commission deducted

When the debtor pays, Merion remits the recovered amount to your client less our commission. A full statement of account is provided. No recovery means no fee — at any point.

Confidentiality

How we protect your client relationship

Many professional advisers are cautious about referring clients to a third party. Here is how we handle the relationship.

We represent your client, not ourselves

Merion acts as your client's appointed recovery agent. All communication with the debtor is conducted on behalf of your client and reflects professionally on them — and by extension, on your practice.

Compliant, professional conduct

We follow the ACCC/ASIC Debt Collection Guideline strictly. No harassment, no contact at inappropriate times, no misleading statements. Compliant conduct is the default — not a premium option.

Transparent documentation

Every action is logged. Your client can review the full history in their portal. There are no surprises about what was said or done on their behalf.

You stay in the loop

As the referring partner, you have portal access to track the referral. If your client has a question they'd prefer to route through you, we are happy to communicate via the practice.

Commission-only model

How the fee structure works

Merion is paid only from recovered funds. If a debt is not recovered, there is no fee — for your client or for you. Commission is calculated as a percentage of the amount recovered. The exact rate depends on the age, size, and complexity of the debt; we provide this in writing before any recovery commences, so there are no surprises.

For a detailed estimate before committing, your client can request a free debt appraisal on the main Merion website. This provides an honest assessment of recoverability and the all-in cost in writing, with no obligation to proceed.
