Frequently asked questions

Partner Programme FAQ

Common questions about joining the programme, referring debts, and how the commission-only model works.

Who can become a Merion partner?

The programme is open to accounting practices, bookkeepers, finance brokers, business advisers, lawyers, and other professional service firms whose clients include Australian businesses with commercial receivables. There is no minimum referral volume and no fee to join.

Is there a cost to join the partner programme?

No. Registration is free. There are no monthly fees, no subscription, and no minimum commitment. You refer debts when you have them.

What does commission-only mean in practice?

Merion is paid only from funds that are actually recovered. If a debt is referred and Merion is unable to recover it, there is no charge — to your client or to you. Commission is calculated as a percentage of recovered amounts and is disclosed in writing before recovery commences.

What types of debts can be referred?

Merion focuses on commercial (business-to-business) debts — overdue invoices, trade accounts, and similar receivables owed to Australian businesses. Consumer debts are outside our scope. Merion operates in QLD, VIC, NSW and the ACT; if a debt falls in another jurisdiction, contact us to discuss.

How old can a debt be before it is referred?

Debts can be referred at any stage, though earlier is generally better — the probability of recovery typically decreases as a debt ages. We will assess any debt honestly and tell you whether we consider it recoverable before any commission is agreed.

What happens to my client relationship during recovery?

Merion acts as your client's appointed recovery agent. We handle all communication with the debtor professionally and in compliance with Australian regulations. Your practice is not involved in the collection process, so the adviser-client relationship is not affected. You can track progress in the partner portal at any time.

Will the debtor know my practice referred the debt?

Merion represents your client — the creditor. The debtor is informed that Merion is acting on behalf of the creditor business, not on behalf of your practice. Your practice's name does not appear in debtor communications.

How quickly does Merion act after a referral?

A recovery specialist reviews new referrals and contacts the referring partner or client within one business day. Recovery activity typically commences within a few days of the initial assessment being agreed.

Can I track the status of debts I have referred?

Yes. Partners have access to the Merion client portal where you can see the current status of each referral. Your client also has their own portal access.

What if my client wants to withdraw a referred debt?

Your client can withdraw a referral at any point before recovery is completed. Contact your named Merion contact to discuss. If no funds have been recovered, there is no charge.

Does Merion take cases to court?

Merion's standard recovery process operates through correspondence, negotiation, and pre-legal action. Court proceedings are a separate matter and are not included in the standard commission-only engagement. Where legal action appears warranted, Merion will advise your client and, if required, can assist with a referral to a commercial solicitor.

What jurisdictions does Merion cover?

Merion currently acts on commercial debts in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory. We are not required to hold a commercial agent licence in these jurisdictions as we do not engage in field-agent activities.

How do I make a referral once I am registered?

Log in to the client portal or use the Refer a Debt form on this site. You will need the debtor's name, the approximate amount owed, and your client's business name. The process takes around two minutes.

Is there a referral incentive or commission for the referring practice?

The programme does not pay a referral commission to the referring practice. The benefit is that your client recovers funds they are owed, which strengthens their cash position and your advisory relationship. If you have questions about specific arrangements, contact us to discuss.
